Global Jinzai program also cites the list of challenges which need to be faced as “environmental issues, resources, energy, and food shortages on a global scale” which demands global human resources in science and engineering equipped to deal with these and find solutions.When I was at Shinshu Innovation Management Institute, I was honoured to be part of a teaching team which developed the ‘Green MOT’ degree which we successfully implemented from 2008 (Shinshu University 2008, 2011). Since 2011, I have been engaged in EL training aimed at masters and doctoral students from a wide range of disciplines (science, engineering and humanities) at Tohoku University (the SERMSS program; Tohoku University, 2012). I’d like to base this presentation therefore on 2 graduate schools with dierent learners- at Shinshu, business education and training and at Tohoku a more academic research environment (Norton et al., 2014).2 BACKGROUND TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMSLet’s start by looking at the problem we are trying to solve.
