EducationTOPICSSchool of General Education: where rst-year stu-dents from all faculties come togetherPractical on-site education in which students ex-perience academic learning in cooperation with the local communityCultivation of an environmental mindset that uti-lizes Shinshu’s natural environmentShinshu University has eight faculties in ve campuses spread across Nagano Prefecture. First-year students from all faculties study together at the School of General Education on the Matsumoto Campus taking general education courses. Our students graduate with an understanding based on practical experience of the connections that can be built between academia and local communities. They have been educated as members of the regional community in which the University is rooted and, on graduation, some will enter the workforce as “local innovators” to serve that community. The training they have received is supported by MEXT*’s COC** and COC+*** funding frameworks, government initiatives that support universities working to build closer ties with their local communities. The key principle of education at Shinshu University is that its graduates should be able to resolve social issues while maintaining an enriched sense of humanity and being able to serve as leaders in society. One aspect of these qualities and capabilities is the “environmental mind”, which is outlined in our diploma policies for undergraduate students. Our “environmental education” is one element of a unique curriculum made possible by Shinshu’s rich natural environment. The Aircraft Systems Collaborative Research Laboratory opened in April 2017 as a part of a new course in the Faculty of Engineering. This new course, which is supported by the Consortium of Shinshu University Aircraft System Collaborative Laboratory Program, aims to promote R&D in the field of aircraft systems and to develop highly skilled personnel for regional and aircraft system industries. The Aircraft Systems Collaborative Research Laboratory opens on the Minami Shinshu / Iida satellite campus5Students learn about local issues through fieldwork.
