28Jumping motion control method for a wheel robot with a exible tail that can instantaneously memorize its shape.Flexible tail that acts to propagate inertia to the body of a mobile robot.Variable stiness mechanism to preserve the shape of a large deformable exible beam.BioengineeringNoriyasu IwamotoAssistant ProfessorInfinite possibilities created by mechanisms and motion control centered on infinite dimensional systemsDepartment of Machinery and RoboticsAnimals adjust the force which acts on the outside world and the outside force which acts on their body by changing the stiffness of their body and the way they act. If we focus on the tail of animals, the tail has a line shape. The tail is capable of acting as a hand. It also supports the body, allows the animal to move in water, and controls the posture of the animal in air. These functions are achieved by adjusting the stiffness of the tail and the way it is moved. It therefore follows that devices with a line (continuum) shape whose stiffness can be changed can also be used for many purposes in the same way as an animal`s tail. In the medical field, such continuum devices can adopt complicated shapes in a confined space, thereby improving the operative control of the device. In our laboratory, we are developing a continuum system that has both a large deformable flexible beam and a variable stiffness. We are also developing a method to control its motion.Assistant Professor Iwamoto received his Ph.D. degr ee in engineering from Kyushu University in 2016. After working as a postdoctoral fellow at Kyushu University, he took up his current position in 2017. His research interests are the mechanics and dynamics of systems, including exible bodies that are centered on robotics and mechatronics.Flexible bodies, which have innite dimensions, have a structure built of many parts. Control of the motion of these parts gives a body whose shape can be controlled. Thus, a robot built with such a exible body has innite applications. We are familiar with many tools with a line shape. We can achieve a future that no-one can imagine, if we are able to the achieve the autonomous working of such tools with line shapes. The possibility of a robot with a exible body will open up a new medical world.Outlook for researchIn our laboratory, students can acquire the knowledge and technical skills of robotics and mechatronics. Additionally, they will acquire abilities that are useful after graduation, such as problem solving ability and presentation skills.Outlook for students after graduationSystem conguration of Robotic Wear curara®Walking and standing-up motion assist using curara®Gait analysis calculates the joint angles, muscular tension, and joint torque based on the data measured by motion capture system.BioengineeringAtsushi TsukaharaAssistant ProfessorAssistive Technology for Activities of Daily Living in our new lifestyleDepartment of Machinery and RoboticsIn our country with a super-ageing society, the locomotive syndrome is a social issue that decreases the independence of the patients with paralyzed lower limbs and increasing the need of nursing-care. In order to resolve these problems, we have been working in research and development on an assistive technology for activity of daily living (ADL). In particular, we aim to create human assistive robots/devices for the patients which are intuitively easy to use. After receiving the PhD degrees in engineering from University of Tsukuba, he was a PhD researcher at the university, and an Associate Program Manager of ImPACT program at JST. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Shinshu University. The goal of our assistive technology is to decrease the risk of injuries to nursing-care of elderly people and patients, and to improve their ADL and QOL. Consequently, the ndings of our study are expected to lead to the practical improvements in elds of daily life.Outlook for researchIn order to develop innovative technology, we have to collaborate closely across multiple specialized elds. Therefore, the goal of education in this lab is to cultivate the pioneering human resources that can empower students to know what to do and how to behave for the benet of all human beings in our society.Outlook for students after graduation
