ResearchSpecial Characteristics of our ResearchInterdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research A group of 5 research institutes charged with cre-ating new elds of interdisciplinary researchWe have established Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER), where our resources will be focused into research elds (Carbon Sci. & Tech., Energy & Environmental Sci., Fiber Eng., Mountain Sci., and Biomedical Sci.) that are unique to Shinshu University. We aim to boost our research and technological innovation capability through the elevation of the research level of our younger professors and through collaboration with distinguished researchers from around the world. We are condent that cutting edge research and the integration of separate research elds in ICCER will lead to the development of a Center of Excellence.InterdisciplinaryCluster forCutting EdgeResearch (ICCER)75Research InstitutesInstitute of Carbon Science and Technology (ICST)Center for Energy and Environmental Science (X-Breed)Institute for Biomedical Sciences (IBS)Institute for Fiber Engineering, Shinshu University (IFES)Institute of Mountain Science (IMS)TOPICSNear-Future Self-Contained Walking Assistance Cyborg ProjectShinshu University’s Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER) is currently developing cyborg science to help mobilize people who have difculty walking due to intractable diseases. The technology will utilize intramedullary nail surgery to implant walking assistance devices equipped with smaller, lighter, and more highly performing components along with contactless rechargeable batteries based on the technologies now used in “curara®” Robotic Wear. This cutting-edge project by ICCER’s four member institutes is Japan’s rst ever collaboration of medicine, engineering, and ber science.International Center for Science and Innovation at Shinshu UniversityGlobal Aqua Innovation Center for Improving Living Standards and Water-sustainability (COI)Shinshu University has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) as a Center of Innovation (COI) site (one of eighteen in Japan). This national-level industry-academia-government collaborative project, which combines leading global technologies, will promote social system innovation toward sustainable use of water.
