At this time, there were only 8 higher schools in Japan, and Matsumoto Higher School was the 9th. It was the rst public higher school to be named after the area in which it was built, subsequently all higher schools were named in this way. The old school building, which has been designated as an important cultural property, is now known as the Culture Hall. The lyrics of the song were written in 1899 by Retsu Asai, a teacher at Nagano Normal School. Separated by rivers and mountains, each region in current Nagano Prefecture had its unique culture and thus had little sense of unity. For this reason, Asai included features of all the regions of the prefecture in these lyrics.* As of the end of the 2015 academic year, we are no longer accepting new School of Law students.
