It is a task regarded as, being of crucial importance to the future of Japanese society in the 21st century. Embracing the promotion of gender equality as a social necessity, Shinshu University will strive to take positive steps towards the creation of a gender-equal society, capitalizing on its institutional strengths as a university composed of multiple faculties. As an education provider, the University undertakes to produce self-reliant graduates committed to the principles of gender equality. As a research institute, the University will contribute to human society as a whole by fostering research excellence. In the field of medicine, men and women working in the University will participate on equal terms in the practice of medicine and will value life and health. Through international exchange programs and collaboration with local communities, the University will promote respect for the diversity of cultural values and will take the initiative in creating a gender-equal society.The Gender Equality Promotion Center promotes more employee-friendly workplaces and better educational environments along with other activities aimed at increasing awareness regarding equal opportunity for both genders and making it possible for everyone to fully utilize their skills and express their individuality.Plan of Action Regarding Gender Equality at Shinshu UniversityEstablishment of the Gender Equality Promotion Center (April 2016)Shinshu University, in accordance with the Shinshu University Gender Equality Declaration and Shinshu University Basic Policy on Gender Equality, implements the following as our action plan. Individual faculties/departments also make proactive efforts toward fulfilling the aims of the action plan.1. Strengthen systems and organizations for promoting gender equality■Through the Gender Equality Promotion Center, which operates under the guidance of the Gender Equality Promotion Committee, the university strives to strengthen systems and environments that facilitate the effective utilization of the personalities and abilities of both men and women.2. Promote and take measures to increase the number of female applicants for research posts and faculty members and support their careers and research activities■■The university will implement affirmative improvement measures (affirmative action) to increase the number of female research applicants and the percentage of female researchers enrolled at the university. The university will continue striving to establish a research environment that includes mentorship systems, research assistant systems and other such frameworks enabling female researchers to showcase their abilities and maximize their potential.3. Increase female participation in university administration and its decision-making processes■■The university will promote the participation of female faculty members in various administrative meetings.The university will further promote and raise the status of its female staff members.4. Create a healthy balance between work and family life (establish a healthy work-life balance)■■■■The university will increase efforts to reduce overtime and increase annual vacation time.The university will encourage aspects such as maternity leave, nursing care leave, and temporary part-time work.The university will encourage ubiquitous network use and application. The university will expand and effectively administer nursery schools within the university.5. Pursue educational and promotional activities with the local community to raise awareness about the need for gender equality■■■■The university will conduct lectures, seminars, and symposiums regarding gender equality.
