Studyingthesuccessesandfailuresofresearchingroups,withmenandwomenfromvariouscountrieshelpsstudentsdevelopstrongprofessionalcommunicationskills.Learningwhatittakestoactually“show”anaudiencethatanengineeringsolutionworks.ThestudentsintheKawamotoLaboratoryworkondevelopingimportantprofessionalcommunicationskillsbyconstructivelyevaluatingthesuccessesandfailuresoftheirresearchworkasmuchaspossibleduringtheschoolyearwiththeircolleagues.TheirtopicsofstudyrangefromITapplicationstosupportEnglisheducationinsideandoutsideoftheclassroomtoinvestigationsofthedesign/developmentchallengesofcyberphysicalsystemsforimprovingtheconditionoflifeinthecommunitiesandsocietyaroundthem.WithmoreandmorestudentseagerandwillingtodoworkinEnglishtolearnitratherthanlearnEnglishtodowork,therewillbegreateropportunitiesforresearchdiscussionsandcollaborationsoutsideofthelaboratory,outsideoftheuniversitythatwillpreparestudentsfortheworkforceevenoutsideofJapan.Byemphasizingthedevelopmentofprofessionalcommunicationskillsthroughouttheresearchprocess,graduatesentertheworkforcewithversatileskillsinadaptingtheirworkdiscussionswithdifferentcolleagues,audiences,clients,etc.PaulineN.Kawamoto(A.P.)hasbeenonthefacultyattheNagano-EngineeringCampusintheDept.ofElectricalandComputerEngineeringsince1996.Developing professional communication skills in engineering studentsKawamoto LabAfter GraduationIn the FutureElectrical& Computer EngineeringKobayashi LabOurlaboratoryisinterestedininteractiondesignforartifactsinthefieldofartificialintelligenceandagricultureusinginformationandcommunicationtechnology(ICTAgriculture).Interactiondesignisaboutdesigningprocessesandexchanginginformationbetweenusersandartifactssuchasrobotsandsoftwareagents,andthuswedevelopnoveldevicesbasedonouruserinterfacetheory.Wealsoapplyourstudytodevelopnovelgadgetsthatincreasestheefficiencyofagriculturaltasks.TherearemanydigitaldevicessuchassmartphonesandtabletPCs.Wedon’tfeelthatitisdifficulttousethem,notbecausetheyaretrulyintelligentanduseful,butbecausewehavethepowerfulabilitytoadapttonewthingswithoutrealizingit.Imaginethefutureinwhichsmartdeviceshelpusautonomouslybeforeweevenrequestthehelp.Ourlaboratoryistryingtobuildnewtheoriesanddevelopvarioussmartdevices.Kazuki Kobayashiis an associate professor at Shinshu University.
