Studentsdefinethespecificationanddesignacircuit.Tofabricateachip,acircuitdesignerdrawsalayoutwithnm-orderscalebyCADsoftware.VLSIchipandmeasurementboard.StudentsdesignandverifyaVLSIchiptoworkasrequired.JohguchiLab.ProgressesofelectronicsandinformationtechnologieshaveproducednewindustriesandservicesliketheInternet,amobilephone,etc.Espcially,thescalingtechnologyofVLSIrealizesawidevarietyoffunctionswithlowcost.Bythecommoditization,thematuredVLSItechnologyhasbeenusedinmanyareas.But,Japaneseelectronicsindustryisstrugglingwithcostcompetitiveness.Toovercomethis,wehavetodifferentiateproductsfromothersandcustomizeourVLSIchipwithacircuitdesigntechnology.Ourlaboratorywilldevelopanewcomputerarchitectureandsystemsbyco-designinghardware,softwareandapplication.“TrillionSensorsUniverse”iscomingupsoon.Trillionsensorscollectandcomputemanyinformationfromtherealworld.Then,VLSIcircuitdesignbecomesakeytechnologyformedicine,agriculture,husbandry,logistics,architectureandcivilengineering.Todistinguishproductsfromthecompetitorsandproduceuniqueproducts,VLSIinnovationisessential.Inourlaboratory,studentscanstudynotonlydigital/analogcircuitdesignbutessentialtechnologiesfromsensordevicestosoftware.Byresearchinginconsiderationoftheoutput,wewillplayavitalroleinthedevelopmentofInformationCommunicationTechnology(ICT).Asagraduationwork,studentsinJohguchiLab.proposeacircuitandarchitectureandusetheirinventivenesstotacklearesearchproject.Studentscanstudyawideareaincludingdevicephysics,measurementtechniqueandsoftwaredevelopment,etc.Also,successfulexperiencesofachievingsomethingbecomeusefulforthefuturejob.KohJohguchiAssociate ProfessorHe received the Ph.Ddegree from Hiroshima University in 2007.His research area is low power VLSI circuit design and computer architecture. VLSI technologies for the Innovation of New ApplicationsComputerScience &EngineeringAfter GraduationIn the FutureKobayashi LabOurlaboratoryisinterestedininteractiondesignforartifactsinthefieldofartificialintelligenceandagricultureusinginformationandcommunicationtechnology(ICTAgriculture).Interactiondesignisaboutdesigningprocessesandexchanginginformationbetweenusersandartifactssuchasrobotsandsoftwareagents,andthuswedevelopnoveldevicesbasedonouruserinterfacetheory.Wealsoapplyourstudytodevelopnovelgadgetsthatincreasestheefficiencyofagriculturaltasks.TherearemanydigitaldevicessuchassmartphonesandtabletPCs.Wedon’tfeelthatitisdifficulttousethem,notbecausetheyaretrulyintelligentanduseful,butbecausewehavethepowerfulabilitytoadapttonewthingswithoutrealizingit.Imaginethefutureinwhichsmartdeviceshelpusautonomouslybeforeweevenrequestthehelp.Ourlaboratoryistryingtobuildnewtheoriesanddevelopvarioussmartdevices.Kazuki Kobayashiis an associate professor at Shinshu University.
