DEPARTMENTOFCHEMISTRYANDMATERIALSDepartment of Chemistry and Materials (Materials and Chemical Engineering Course)FacultyMASTER’S PROGRAM OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 14 DEPARTMENTS030We are working on processes and systems for solving environmental problems. For example, Professor Nobuhide Takahashi is developing high-density carbide fuel made from wood biomass. 70% of the energy that biomass holds becomes available as fuel by adsorbing and collecting tar ingredient formed at the time of carbonization by the carbide itself. In addition, compressed and molded carbide fuel becomes high-density fuel having heat quantity and density that is equal to coal. Thus, utilizing the carbide fuel is enabled just like coal in high-efficiency coal-fired power stations, and would lead to the reduction of transportation cost that is the problem of biomass utilization.Carbonized anddensifiednear mountainsTransportationcost reduced High-efficiency powergeneration inlarge-scale coal-firedpower stationCarbon neutralCO2High-densitycarbide fuelWe come up with a system required by the society, compose required materials and develop their production processes. For example, Professor Mutsumi Kimura developed a fiber spinning process that can make conductive macromolecules fibrose continually. Putting your hand on the cloth made of conductive fiber enables measuring your heart rate. We can expect fiber and cloth made from conductive macromolecules to be a platform for next-generation ambient devices.Ambient device watching usWe are working on energy devices such as fuel cells and dye-sensitised solar cells and capacitors. For example, Professor Wataru Sugimoto is developing a next-generation electricity storage device that would be more high-performing than a lithium-ion cell. A new hybrid electricity storage device is under study, which would enable an electric car to cruise between Tokyo and Osaka by 5-minute charge and a cell-phone running for one week by several-second charge.Tackling energy problems with nanomaterialManufacturing high-density carbide fuel! Why not make contribution to the progression of tech and industry to realize a dream? The Department Materials and Chemical Engineering Course conducts education and cutting-edge R&D for developing materials, their production processes and utilization systems that would contribute toward solving global issues of resources, energy and global environment to construct sustainable 21st century social systems.TatsueiHaraStarted in 2013 / Dr. Murakami's LabIn my aspect of learning, I can conduct research that is useful to society by furthering a study subject with various viewpoints in mind every day. When I make presentation at a conference, I can have opportunities to meet people from other universities and companies and gain various inspirations. In my aspect of daily life, I share more time with seniors and younger students than as an undergraduate. I do sports and camping with my lab members and my student life is fulfilling both officially and privately. Why not open up your potential with us?RecentCareerPathsYasushi Murakami, ProfessorMaterials Chemistry and Catalytic ChemistryRubber of human-skin softness, solution of water problems using fibers and thermal power generation using infrared antennaNobuhide Takahashi, ProfessorChemistry Engineering and Environment EngineeringTechnical development of biomass production, energy/material utilization and porous membrane separationTokihiro Takizawa, Assistant ProfessorPhysical Property of Inorganic Materials, Atom and MoleculeDesign and production of reaction device with microwave, creation of materials, and calculation of electronic state of solidIori Shimada, Assistant ProfessorReaction Chemistry and Catalytic ChemistryImprovement in efficiency of catalytic substance conversion technologies aiming at effective utilization of biomass resourcesHiroaki Yoshida, Assistant ProfessorPolymer chemistry and engineering and biomaterial scienceCreation of safe and reliable polymer materials including gels and nonwoven fabrics, and their application in the biomedical and environmental fieldsMitsumasa Osada, Associate ProfessorSupercritical Fluid Engineering and Biomass EngineeringCreation of functional materials from local biomass resources by use of high-temperature, high-pressure waterHiroshi Fukunaga, Associate ProfessorChemistry Engineering, Electrochemistry and Electrode MaterialsDevelopment of new materials of non-platinum catalyst for fuel cell and technical advance by optimization of electrode structureShogo Mori, Associate ProfessorOrganic Solar Cell and Interfacial Electron TransferInvestigation of electronic movement mechanism in organic/inorganic interfacial surface and development of high-efficiency organic solar batteryTakaaki Sato, Associate ProfessorChemical Physics and Soft Matter Physics of SolutionDevelopment of boundary region among solution, macromolecule, gel, colloid, living organisms using spectrum method and dispersion methodHisanao Usami, ProfessorPhotochemistry, Photocatalyst and Artificial PhotosynthesisDevelopment of artificial photosynthesis model using nano-laminated film and photochemical reaction deviceMutsumi Kimura, ProfessorFunctional Materials Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Textile ChemistryCreation of functional materials by means of nanostructure control using precise synthesis techniquesWataru Sugimoto, ProfessorFuel Cell and Super CapacitorDevelopment of synthesis method of new nanomaterials including nanoseat and the application to electricity storage/generation technologyToray, Teijin, Kuraray, Asahi Kasei, Shin-Etsu Chemical, Mitsubishi Rayon, Showa Denko, JGC, Chiyoda, Idemitsu Kosan, Dai Nippon Printing, Toppan Printing, DIC, Nippon Paint, W.L.
