DEPARTMENTOFCIVILENGINEERINGDepartment of Civil EngineeringFacultyWe conduct research on the strength and design of bridges. In our research on strength, we especially investigate the shaking of bridges during earthquakes by using computational simulation. In our design research, we investigate the influence of the color and shape of bridges on peoples impressions.Bridges with strength and beauty – Grand design of bridgesRecently, various types of new road safety measures are being introduced, including signals controlling vehicles and pedestrians separately with walk buttons, roundabouts, and newly designed traffic and direction signs. To improve these new measures, we conduct experiments, investigations, and analyses in cooperation with the regulation section of prefectural police departments.Research on road-traffic safety measuresFacing a global shortage of water, there are more countries and regions that use groundwater as drinking, industrial, and irrigational water. In order to solve the problems of the unrestricted use and pollution of groundwater, we work on visualization of groundwater by conducting research on the detection of water sources and underground flow paths, residence time (age) of water, quantity of groundwater resources, and pollution mechanisms, for safe and sustainable use and management of groundwater resources and environmental conservation in water source areas.Groundwater science for a water-sustainable societyWe develop functional materials with adsorbents such as natural zeolite adsorbing radioactive cesium and nutrient salts. We investigate countermeasure against contamination after the Great East Japan Earthquake, eutrophication in enclosed water areas, and groundwater pollution with arsenic or nitric acid, in an industry-academia-government collaborative project, focusing on their practical use.Development of functional materials and application to environmental issuesSHINSHU UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MASTER’S PROGRAM019Noriaki Sogawa, Associate ProfessorNon-stationary Frequency Analysis of PrecipitationNon-stationary frequency analysis to seek probabilistic precipitation for flood control and water utilization planningTatsuo Takase, Associate ProfessorTransportation Planning, Civil Engineering Planning, and Transportation EngineeringResearch on urban planning focusing on transportation and research related to safety and reliability of road utilizationCao Xi, Assistant ProfessorStructural Mechanics, Diagnosis of Structural Deterioration, and Heat Conduction AnalysisResearch on diagnosis of deterioration of civil engineering structures, dynamic analysis of bridges, and unsteady heat conduction analysis of structuresMasashi Toyota, Assistant ProfessorHydraulic EngineeringInvestigation on water current mechanisms in lakes and riversTakashi Kawamura, Associate ProfessorUnsaturated Soil and GeosyntheticsEstablishment of capillary barriers using polymer air-permeable waterproof sheets for slope disaster prevention technologyAkito Matsumoto, Associate ProfessorWater Environment Engineering and Sanitary EngineeringBiological treatment of waste and wastewater and aerobic purification of polluted groundwaterTakeo Umezaki, ProfessorSoft Ground Improvement and Purification of Water and Bottom SedimentTechnology of consolidation, dewatering, and volume reduction using vacuum technology and measures against eutrophication in enclosed water areasShigeru Koyama, Associate ProfessorComputational Mechanics and Material MechanicsAnalysis on overall behavior of composite materials and simulations related to construction management and disaster preventionYoshio Fujii, Associate ProfessorRegional PlanningAnalysis of the regional environment and research on urban planningShigeru Shimizu, ProfessorBridge Engineering and Bridge AestheticsBuckling and load carrying capacity of steel bridges, behavior of steel bridges under seismic load, and shape and color harmony of bridgesToshiyuki Ohkami, ProfessorNumerical Analysis on Structural EngineeringParameter identification of material properties, assessment of landslide and mudflow hazard risks, and simulation of evacuation behaviorShinji Nakaya, ProfessorHydrology and Groundwater DatingInvestigation and research on groundwater flow visualization using chemical tracers and groundwater pollution mechanismsTakuoUedaStarted in 2013 / Dr. Shimizu's LabCivil engineering is the study of support infrastructure for people's lives. At present, in graduate school, I'm researching the strength of bridges. In graduate school, of course, I can conduct more advanced research than in the undergraduate program. Also, I can exchange opinions with my lab colleagues and teachers on my research and the future, as well as on daily life. I am spending my time here in a fulfilling way.It is my dream to become a civil engineer participating in the construction of a variety of structures. I would like to practice what I have learned in Shinshu to contribute to society. We support society and local communities by creating a safe, reliable, and comfortable living environment. We conduct research on social infrastructure to create a disaster-mitigating social environment, environmental hazard prevention methods aiming at a symbiosis with natural environments, and regional planning to design comfortable urban communities by employing advanced expert knowledge.RecentCareerPathsMinistry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Nagano Prefectural Government, Aichi Prefectural Government, Tokyo Prefectural Government, Nagano City Office, Nagoya City Office, East Japan Railway, Central Japan Railway, West Japan Railway, Taisei Corporation, Chiyoda, Yahagi Construction, CTI Engineering, Chuo Consultants, Kyoshingiken, Chodai, Toyo Sekkei, Hitachi Advanced Systems, Fujita, Ichinomiya City Office, Ena City Office, Daitetsu Kogyo, Kiso-jiban Consultants, Shizuoka Prefectural Government, Tekken Corporation, a railway company, JRTT, Toyohashi City Office, Nakanihon Air Service, Central Nippon Expressway Maintenance, Nishimatsu Construction, East Nippon Expressway, Yamanashi Prefectural Government, Yokogawa Construction
