Professor Hirofumi Kaneko山岳地域は、陸上に残された数少ない貴重な自然資源であり、同時に、様々な負荷の影響を受けやすい脆弱な環境です。高山から里地・里山にいたるこの環境系は、マクロの自然変動の影響はもとより人類の進化に伴って、人間の生活系との相互作用によって大きく変動している地域です。信州大学は、このように山岳環境の様々な要因による変化と人間の営みとの関係を総合的に探求する学問領域「山岳科学」を創造するのに最適な立地条件にあるのみならず、山岳科学に関連する人文科学・社会科学・理学・工学・農学・医学などの研究者の集積は質・量ともに国内随一です。これを背景に、山の環境と人間とのかかわりに関する総合的研究を推進する目的で、山岳科学総合研究所は2006年7月に設立されました。山岳科学総合研究所の基本理念は、今後100年間の近未来を見据えた、自然環境と人間活動との持続的な融合の方策を探るものです。そのためには、環境問題の根幹をなす物質循環・動態や、地表変動・災害メカニズム、生物多様性・多種共存機構などを地球環境科学の視点からきめ細かく解析すると同時に、こうした地球環境科学的分析が山岳地帯の麓に暮らす人々にどのように影響し、また人々はどのように山岳地帯と関わっていくことが望ましいのかについても森林、里山、都市部を通じて解析します。山岳地域における環境問題として、地球温暖化による植相の変化、不安定な地盤への人間活動の拡大による災害の頻発化、里山の放置による生物多様性の激減などがあげられます。山岳科学総合研究所では、まず、今後100年間（21世紀）の人間を含む生命系の永続的な維持をめざして、大気・大地・生命の有機複合的な自然環境のダイナミズムを明らかにし、自然環境再生・保全・活用および防災を実践することのできる基盤資料を提供したいと考えています。The Shinshu area provides an environment most conducive for researching about nature and society. (Shinshu is the archaic name of Nagano Prefecture, where the university is located.) Through the establishment of the institute of Mountain Science, we are particularly attempting to solve several issues related to the interaction between nature and human life in the mountainous and rural spaces of Shinshu. By reporting our study results to the world, we will attempt to develop a new relationship between nature and human life in the 21st century. Moreover, we believe that the result will promote the advancement of the eld of education and research at Shinshu University and development of the Shinshu area. The mountain area has an extremely sensitive natural environment system. The system reacts sensitively to changes in the external environments, such as e global warming. Consequently, Mountain Science will be absolutely indispensable to ensure that human activities coexist with nature. The Institute of Mountain Science, Shinshu University, will precisely analyze global environmental problems, with regard to establishing a sound material-cycle society, and study their dynamics. The institute will also study the diversity in wildlife and systems in which various organisms can coexist. We will also investigate how these issues affect people who inhabit the foot of the mountain. Further, we will study the forests, rural spaces, and urban areas to propose how people should live in the mountainous area. The Institute of Mountain Science, Shinshu University, has placed great value to develop the new study domain of Mountain Science so that people and nature can coexist while utilizing the abundant natural resources Shinshu has to offer.
