In April 2003, Shinshu University, following collaboration between the social, natural sciences and engineering departments, became the first National University in Japan to open a Graduate School in Innovation Management focused on meeting the needs of mature students.
This introduced a new trend in Japanese Universities towards supporting societal innovation in the 21st century. While raising the employability of our graduates, we aim to share our results and experience with the rest of the world.
The Institute of Innovation Management provides a two-year course resulting in a Masters in Management, specially designed for those who wish to develop their skills while continuing in their existing job. Since 2008, a second Masters focusing on innovation in the field of environmental sustainability has been introduced (the Green MOT course).
Class times are designed outside normal working hours as shown below.

In addition intensive short courses are held on public holidays and during the summer break.
Of course, studying at university while continuing a full-time job is not easy.
Our students need to receive the understanding and support of their workplace and family and manage their time skilfully while attending university. It goes without saying that we expect students to be able to attend each class on time, but we do recognise that sometimes urgent demands may occasionally require students to miss individual classes. While some classes are based on discussions between tutors and students, in the lecture-based classes, it is possible to catch up by using the Web-based e-learning resources of the School.
In addition, tutors are available at specified hours to deal with any questions concerning class content, research and other issues concerning students.
