PDF Developing and Applying the Vaulting Horse with the Audio Feedback Mechanism for the Effective Gymnastic Class

【Supercategory:7. DESCENTE SPORTS SCIENCE Subcategory:7.12 Vol.12

In this experiment, we used three different vaulting horses in the gymnastic classes : the ordinary vaulting horse covering the top with white canvas (see figure 2 - ① ; the horse with the three different color vinyl adhesive tapes on the top (see figure 2 - ②) the horse with the vinyl color tapes and the feedback mechanism capable of sending the subject promptly three different short melodies, depending on which colored area he touches (see figure 1 and 2 - ③). We have examined how the visual information (color tapes) and that of sound (melodies) helped the subject recognize where his hands are on the top.
184 school children of both sexes, ranging from 2nd to 6th graders of the elementary school, were employed as subjects. The results obtained were as follows :
 1. When they were asked which horse they wanted to try, most of the subjects chose the colored horses (② and ③). About 30% of the 2nd and 6th graders answered that they wanted to try the ordinary horse (①).
 2. After they tried each horse, we asked them where their hands were. At the same time, we videotaped their performance to get more objective information as to where their hands were on the top. Comparing the results from the VTR analysis with those from their own observation, we noticed the following :
 (1) The color tapes of the horse were comparatively effective for the 2nd graders, and a little more effective for the 3rd graders.
 (2) As for the 4th graders, the colored horses were very effective, and the specially devised horse with the melodies gained some effect.
 (3) The melodies proved to be very useful information for 5th and 6th graders, and the information of color tapes was effective for the 6th graders.
 3. According to the results of the questionnaire, they showed much interest in the special horse (③).
We can conclude that the vaulting horse with melodies proved to be very effective to help them recognize their own movements and to stimulate their motivation for the gymnastic class.
