Ph.D. Program

I)@Outline of the Course

Mission: The Ph.D. course is a 4-year program. The goal of this program is to maintain a constant focus on medical development and human welfare, pursuing the depths of truth in medical studies and to produce medical researchers and advanced medical practitioners who undertake ultra-modern medical treatments.  Furthermore, we encourage medical researchers who perform creative research founded in science to lead the world in the fields of medical transplants and genetic and reproductive medical treatments.

Please be aware of the following conditions;

1. You must have eighteen years of schooling to apply for the Ph.D. course.

2. You must contact your prospective academic supervisor in the field of your interest and obtain his/her permission of acceptance PRIOR TO applying for the doctoral course.  Refer to the List of Departments and Research Fields for the Ph.D. Program.

3. A high proficiency in English is a requirement to apply for the Ph.D. program. While almost all lectures are conducted in Japanese, assistance in the form of handouts and presentation materials in English is provided.

Another important note is about the visa.  All overseas applicants are required to possess a permit to enter Japan.  Refer to the following Two Ways to Enter Japan.

II) Two Ways to Enter Japan

After the successful documentation prescreening, all applicants must enter Japan to sit for the entrance examination.

The most common way is to register as a research student, kenkyusei, until you enter our Ph.D. course.  You may apply for a student visa with a letter of acceptance as a research student from your prospective supervisor.  In this way, as you already possess a student visa at the time of entrance examination, there is no need to leave Japan or to change your visa statuses when you start the Ph.D. course.

The other way, which you may find more practical if you sit for the September examination and start the Ph.D. course in April, is to get a temporary single entry visa. You state your purpose to undertake the entrance examination, and intention to return home shortly after the test. Upon passing the entrance examination, you will be able to apply for a student visa with our cooperation.

Obtaining a temporary entry visa or a student visa usually takes a minimum of 2 months.  Therefore, to secure your entry into Japan in time, it is advised that your initial contact with your prospective supervisor be done at least six months prior to the entrance examination period.

*Research Student Status) a non-degree research status under the supervision of an academic advisor, up to one year, with possible extensions to a maximum of two years.

III) General Timetable

Admission to the Ph.D. course is currently made twice a year: April and October. For the April enrollment, the examination is offered twice a year: in September and in March.  For the October admission, applicants must take the examination in September.  The application periods for both enrollments usually fall one or two months prior to the examination periods.  A prospective supervisorfs approval letter is also a mandatory document to sit for the entrance examination and for a student visa application.  Therefore, contacting the supervisor in your field of interest as early as possible is always advised.  See the General Timetable attached at the end of this file.
