Evaluation of heterogeneities in oxygen supply and uptake in skeletal muscle and their physiological roles during exercise

To evaluate heterogeneities in oxygen supply and uptake in skeletal muscle, some developed advanced methodologies such as near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and positron emission tomography (PET) have been available. I will review the characteristic of these imaging modalities, and the evidences obtained from each methodology, especially PET, with focusing human studies. Then, I will consider some possible mechanisms for heterogeneous oxygen supply and uptake in skeletal muscle. As future perspectives, their physiological roles during exercise (physical training, aging, linkage to systemic responses) will be discussed.
