The purpose of this
study was to analyse the expression pattern of moesin in
various oral lesions, and examined the correlation between
the degree of moesin expression and various
clinicopathological indices in oral squamous cell
carcinoma.
Tissue samples of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n=59),
dysplastic squamous epithelia (n=16), verrucous carcinoma
(n=8),and normal mucosa (n=5) were obtained. All specimens
were examined immunohistochemically using monoclonal
antibody (CR-22). The intensity of the antibody staining was
graded on 4-point scale (negative, 0; strongly positive,3+).
For the statistical analysis of the expression of mosin,
Mann-Whitney's U test and Kruskal-Wallis rank test was
used.
As compared with the expression of moesin in normal mucosa and
dysplasitc quamous epithelia, moesin expresion in SCC was
significantly decreased in the cell membrane and increased
in the cytoplasm.. There was a correlation between total
malignancy score and the degree of moesin expression in cell
membrane.
Our results suggest that moesin expression could be one of the
biological markers for the degree of malignancy of the oral
squamous cell carcinoma.
