Education and Research Center of Alpine Field Science (AFC)

A facility for practical education and research that takes advantage of its rich natural environment

The Education and Research Center of Alpine Field Science (AFC) was established in 2002 as an education and research facility of the Faculty of Agriculture, and as an integration of Research Farms, Research Forests and the Institute for Highland and Cool Zone Agriculture. The purpose of the AFC is to offer education and research opportunities in biological production techniques and environmental management technologies as a field science center, and to offer community studies in order to extensively contribute to the development of the local community.
The AFC consists of three research divisions (8 teaching staff, 4 facility staff, 8 technical staff and 4 support staff) and separate research facilities (stations). The divisions are: (1) Technological Exchange and Extension Division (facilitates joint research, continuing education, open lectures and transfer of technology), (2) Food Production Science Division (offers education and research opportunities in sustainable agricultural production), and (3) Environmental Science Division (offers education and research opportunities in agricultural and forest environments, mountain environment conservation and mountainous disaster prevention).
The AFC has four stations located in different areas, including on the Shinshu University campus, in outstanding natural environment settings that no other Japanese university can offer. The stations offer practical education and research activities in the field, while implementing sustainable agricultural and forestry practices that utilize the natural environment.
