Overview
University-industry collaborative research is conducted jointly by Shinshu University faculty and a researcher from the private industry sector on a common topic and with funds provided by private industry.
Collaborative research policy
Collaborative research is of utmost value to education and research at Shinshu University and it will undertake only those projects that it deems not an impediment to education and research. Furthermore, Shinshu University will engage in collaborative research only when it is hopeful that conducting joint research on a common topic or dividing the research work has the potential to produce outstanding research results.
Terms and Conditions
Upon entering into a collaborative research agreement, the private research administrator must adhere to the following conditions.
- The Private Researcher may not unilaterally terminate the joint research.
- Unless otherwise stated in a separate agreement between the University and the Private Researcher, any facilities, supplies, etc. newly acquired by the University for use of the joint research and through the research funds and are the property of the University. Any facilities, supplies, etc. that are newly acquired by the Private Researcher are the property of the Private Researcher.
- In the event that the Private Researcher terminates the research or extends the research period due to unavoidable circumstances, the University shall incur no liability. In principle, the University shall not refund any funds intended for the joint research.
- In principle, the Private Researcher must pay the expenses required to conduct the research prior to commencing research. Subject to agreement with the University and consistent with the research plan, the Private Researcher may pay the required research expenses in installments.
- In the event that the research results are to be publicly disclosed, the Private Researcher shall make prior agreements with the University.
Collaborative research expenses
- The University shall provide its facilities, equipment, etc., for the joint research and shall bear the cost of maintenance and management of said facilities, equipment, etc.
- The Private Researcher shall bear the expenses [Direct Expenses] such as honorarium fees, travel expenses, personnel fees, expendable item fees, and electricity/fuel/water utility fees that are expressly required to conduct the joint research plus management expenses [Indirect Expenses] related to the conduct of the joint research. (Indirect Expenses will be assessed as equivalent to 10% of the Direct Expenses: relevant to applications as of January 2008). In addition, the Private Researcher shall bear the expenses necessary to conduct the research.
- In order to appropriately allot the expenses required to conduct the joint research, the University may, as necessary and within budget limits, bear a portion of the Direct Expenses.
Research locations and facilities
For the purpose of conducting University research or its share of the allotted research, the University researcher may conduct said research at the research facility locations of the Private Researcher. In such a case, this will be treated as an official business trip for the purpose of conducting research. The University may accept equipment, supplies, etc., from the Private Researcher when it determines that doing so is necessary to conduct the joint research. In principle, the installation and the installation expenses shall be borne by the Private Researcher.
Application procedures

- Report of Completion
Upon completion of the joint research, the research coordinator shall promptly notify the Director of the Department of Research Promotion Director. - Public disclosure of research results
In principle, the results of the joint research shall be publicly disclosed. As deemed necessary, the University shall consult and come to agreement with the Private Researcher as to the timing and method of the public disclosure of the research results.
Filing a patent application
- If one researcher conceives an invention as a result of the joint research, the researcher must promptly notify the other researcher. The researchers shall make diligent effort to decide ownership of rights and to facilitate a smooth patent application process.
- Researcher independently conceives an invention and intends to file a patent application, the researcher must receive prior acknowledgement from the other researcher stating that said invention was conceived independently.
- If, as a result of the joint research, the University researcher and the Private Researcher jointly conceive an invention and seek to file a patent application, the application shall be filed as a joint application for patent after entering into a joint application agreement that stipulates the interests of each party.
Implementation of patent rights
- For an invention conceived as a result of joint research, the University may grant the use of its patent rights at its discretion. For joint ownership of patent rights, priority of implementation will be given to the Private Researcher or to a party designated by the Private Researcher for a period not to exceed ten years from the date of application.
- Extension of the implementation period will be considered on the basis of fairness and whether there is no damage to the public interest.
