Graduate School of Education
The Graduate School of Education Master's Program offers two majors and twelve specializations. Datails of each course are as given below.
School Education Major
School Education Major comprises two specializations : School Education and Clinical Psychology. This major has been structured to foster specialists in both school education and clinical psychology through a system of research and education for teachers conducting clinical and practical education to help to solve education issues in modern society. The with a curriculum is designed by teachers engaged in cutting-edge research in the areas of education, educational psychology, special needs education, early childhood education, and clinical psychology in order to realize the research and educational objectives of the graduate course.
Subject Pedagogy Major
Subject Pedagogy Major comprises ten spedializations : Japanese Education, Social Science Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Music Education, Fine Arts Education, Health and Physical Education, Technology Education, Domestic Science Education, and English Education. This major has been structured to build a foundation for various subject matters through a system of research and education of teachers researching organic relationships between each science and the pedagogy of each subject. The curriculum is designed by teachers engaged in cutting-edge research in each area of individual science and subject pedagogy in order to realize the research and educational objectives of the graduate course.
Graduate School students must also study two compulsory subjects : Modern Pedagogics and Modern Educational Psychology, as the basic subjects needed to foster education specialists with the exceptional skills demanded in this modern society. That also aims to enable them to make creative research of wide-ranging educational issues, including school education in Japan, from many comprehensive and diverse angles.
Together with their majors, students must also study three other compulsory subjects : General Theory of Education (lectures, 2 credits), Practical Theory of Education (lectures, 2 credits) and Classroom Research (practical, 2 credits), in order to carry out theoretical and practical research of various aspects of practical training in education and other individual sciences, and in particular to investigate integration of theory and practice from a practical perspective.
This major enhances practical education research and subject pedagogy research in close coordination with attached elementary and junior high schools, special needs schools and kindergartens.
About one third of the student quota has been set aside to accept working teachers. These students are treated as an exception to education methods stipulated in Article 14 of the Board of Education Standards for the Establishment of Graduate Schools, so they can make use of the long-term study program for teaching staff during their first year to devote themselves to their studies, and then in their second year they can return to their schools and continue their research and education while teaching.
