Aims

In keeping with the above ideals, the School of Medicine has the following major missions: education, research, contributions to the community and international exchange.

Education

The School of Medicine educates the students to:

1. possess the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes to be a clinician and health professionals.

2. comprehend medical problems and develop the skills for solving them on their own initiative.

3. acquire the humanity and ethics befitting a clinician and health professionals.

4. grow as a person of culture through a wide-ranging liberal arts education.

5. develop foreign language skills for international communication.

Research

The School of Medicine will:

1. carry out creative research at a world-class level, and by so doing, propagate the sense of wonderment about human life and pursue medical investigation into the profoundest truths so as to contribute to human welfare.

2. promote the building of a scientific base for highly advanced fields of medicine such as transplantation and gene therapy.

3. carry out research work with a comprehensive outlook incorporating disciplines such as ecology. sociology and informational science in order to bring about longevity and a high quality of life.

Contributions to the community

The School of Medicine is committed to:

1. providing the community with medical care, health care and welfare and understanding medical research of a global standard.

2. supporting the community in forming a healthy society with a sense of purpose in life by making available information concerning the human sciences.

3. supporting the establishment of local industries to life sciences and human sciences by putting intellectual asserts into practical use.

International exchange

The School of Medicine will:

1. make available throughout the world the results of its high-quality research and promote collaboration and exchange with foreign researchers.

2. further promote international exchange of students and researchers and encourage direct contact between people of different countries.

Message from Dean, School of Medicine

Shinshu University School of Medicine is located in the City of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. Matsumoto, a historical castle town just celebrated a centennial municipality, is widely known as a city flourishing with culture.
Matsumoto is called as the city of three "gakus": the City of Mountains, sangaku, the City of Education, gakumon, and the City of Music, ongaku. It is situated at the foot of Northern Japan Alps with nature abundance. Former Matsumoto High School under old education system where renowned scholars, such as Morio Kita (psychiatrist/novelist) studied is the predecessor of the present Shinshu University. Matsumoto is also the birthplace of internationally well-known Suzuki Method, talent education especially in music. In summer the city hosts the Saito Kinen Festival under the directorship of Maestro Seiji Ozawa. I certainly hope you will enjoy rich and fulfilling student life in this city of many blessings.
Striving for offering training to become clinicians and health professionals with excellence, Shinshu University School of Medicine offers those enrolled in Division of Medicine a mandatory six-year education covering courses from basic to clinical medicine and those in Division of Health Sciences four-year education courses aiming at professional licenses in nursing, health and welfare, midwifery, laboratory science, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Furthermore, new joint programs such as freshmen seminars are in progress.
Though liver transplantation, regenerative medicine, and clinical genetics are the fields the school has received much publicity by media, our medical education and research cover wide range from molecular biology to clinical and social medicine. The major fields in Health Sciences study and research cover nursing, laboratory science, physical therapy and occupational therapy
