Message from Dean, Faculty of Agriculture
Faculty of Agriculture Admission Policy
We are looking for people who aspire to create a harmonious coexistence between nature and mankind for a sustainable society. We are waiting to warmly welcome people who will actively confront and deal with the issues of food production, sustainable farming, preservation of forest and rice field environments, biolife development, and food and health, working to promote the science of food and plants, and contribute to society.
The campus of the Faculty of Agriculture at Shinshu University is located in the foothills of the Southern Alps, in the middle of a forest highland area at 770m. It sits amid 53ha which includes the Education and Research Center of Alpine Field Science and maintains its own field-work forest, providing an excellent agricultural education and research facility. Added to this in the area behind the university there are dairies, flower growers, orchardists, rice growers and highland vegetable farms actively participating in specialist farming. The field-work forest reaches the alpine belt, combining multiple forest types, while rock falls and their reconstruction provide an education and research location, the perfect location for practical field work and an education grounded in food and plants.
Recently it is said that agriculture seems to be removed from the point of production. Here we educate highly skilled professionals able to take the lead in food and plant study. This comes by combining field work and laboratory experiences, gained through application in the field of lectures and experiments and made possible by the location of the faculty. As for mankind's health, agricultural science is the answer to the post-genome age. Because agricultural science covers everything from the food we put into our mouths to the environment, it leads in the study of environmental factors for food and plants. In advanced nations such as ours where food is in over-supply, due to the need for safety and peace of mind in food production, the major emphasis has moved from quantity to quality, while health benefits in food are being reexamined. The stress we have in our lives is relieved by the healing power of animals, plants, forests, mountains and fields. Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture at Shinshu University where through the study of food and plants we support life activity and health, where "the science of food and plants is grounded in the field."
